What’s Cookin'? #2 - The Upgrade System, "Innovation", and Original Soundtrack Release!

Happy Sunday, everyone! Summer is on the horizon, and we are hard at work on some really neat stuff before we get started on building levels for Chapter 2. We don’t have too much to show for the upcoming update but trust me when I say that it’s gonna be exciting once it is released! 😁

Here are some of the thrilling developments going on with the game and our studio!

The Upgrade System

Mockup of the Upgrade Menu UI

This was something we wanted to implement into the game from the start for multiple reasons, but due to time restraints, we couldn’t get it done in time for LBS Game Awards (expect an article talking about that in the forthcoming weeks 😉). But, that doesn’t mean that we’ve dropped the idea at all.

We’ve only started working on the Upgrade System, but some of the other “subsystems” that will allow us to build this are already in place, such as the “Modular Variable Savefile System”. (Keep reading…)

In short, you’ll be able to find “Uplinks”. They’re basically thumb drives that allow you to upgrade certain skills, such as how many walljumps you can do in a row, how much stamina is consumed when wallrunning or sliding, etc.

The system is still being mocked up, but you can expect the actual development on it to start shortly after this article is released!

The “Modular Variable Savefile System”

Initial Flowchart of MVSS.

To make other elements of the game like the Upgrade System and much more, we’ve made something we like to call the “Modular Variable Savefile System”, shorthand MVSS. It’s a simple but efficient way to make encrypted savefiles that can write, read and locally save any kind of serializable variable or class in C#.

It’s functional but doesn’t do too much other than what we stated above. We might be open to sharing this system as implemented in Unity to GitHub so that it can be shared with, used, and improved on by other developers!

While we haven’t moved our initial save file for Levels to the new system, it might happen soon. But, hopefully, we’ll be able to find a way to automatically convert these savefiles over to the new system.

Chapter 1 Original Soundtrack… Coming next week 😀

We are having issues with our distributor being slow at approving the release, but trust me. This doesn’t mean that the release will be otherwise delayed. On the 26th of May, the soundtrack for Just Keep Running: Chapter 1 will be released on at least YouTube, Bandcamp, and as a bonus download if you decide to pay at least $2 for the game on Itch.io!

Streaming and Download releases will arrive hopefully by that time or sometime later, but you’ll be able to find it first to stream on our YouTube channel and Victor Ahlin’s Bandcamp.

TikTok, BikBok, KikKo– No wait…

Tiktok

If you don’t mind being (allegedly) spied on by China, you can find us now on TikTok!

We’ll be posting the same type of Shorts content that you may find on Instagram or YouTube, but we are hopeful that with this it’ll reach a bit a larger audience.

In the meantime, while you wait for the next version of the game, you can check out Version 1.1.1 right here! You can also check us out on our socials!
